Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector Program

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm Program
To stress the importance of working smoke alarms, the Fairborn Fire Department implemented a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm giveaway program. This program is available to Fairborn & Bath Township residents, at no cost. Battery-operated smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are available, while supplies last.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives
An inexpensive smoke alarm with functioning batteries may save your life in the event of a fire. A simple smoke alarm alert will warn you and your family of a fire, especially while sleeping, so you can get out of the house alive.

Maintenance

  • Install a smoke alarm on each level of your home, especially near bedrooms.
  • Install a smoke alarm in each bedroom and “Close Before You Doze” (sleep with the bedroom door shut).
  • Test the alarm
  • Replace the smoke alarm's batteries at least twice a year when you change your clocks unless your alarm is equipped with a lifetime 10-year battery.
  • Replace any smoke alarm more than 10 years old.

 CO Alarms Save Lives
During the winter months when the furnace is running almost nonstop, there is an odorless, colorless, tasteless, and potentially hazardous gas that can invade your home - carbon monoxide (CO). Other potential sources of carbon monoxide include other gas-operated appliances, motor vehicles, lawn equipment, generators, grills, and wood stoves. The gas can be deadly in a closed, tightly insulated area. A carbon monoxide alarm may save your life by alerting you if the gas is present in your home.

Know the signs of carbon monoxide exposure
Low levels of CO can cause headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and irritability. High levels of long exposure to CO could cause vomiting, loss of consciousness, and eventually, death. If you suspect CO poisoning, get everyone out of the house immediately and call 911.
